It was good fun to extract different ethnic dresses, Singaporean and Taiwanese, and come up with a single look for a figure. The coconut trees and sunset were inspired by a Burmese photo. I like putting exotic objects in a painting as points of interest, e.g. the elephant and the umbrella.

Frances has been drawing since three years of age. Born in Taiwan and raised in Okinawa, she took art classes throughout high school and went to Parsons School of Design in New York City for a year. She also went back to Taiwan and drew political cartoons for a daily newspaper. Her desire to create beauty eventually led her to Maui, Hawaii. At 32 years old, she finally began painting full time by teaching herself watercolors. Watercoloring for her has been a lesson in respecting the element of water and being a co-creating partner to the dance.
