Artist's Description

This is a commission for the Karn family of Ohio who vacationed in Maui in 2011.

To begin, I needed a good photo of a Polynesian canoe. So nothing made me happier than seeing two hand-carved canoes displayed at the lawns of the very hotel where I met the Karns. I snapped some photos and used the best one as my reference.

Frances Ku

Frances has been drawing since three years of age. Born in Taiwan and raised in Okinawa, she took art classes throughout high school and went to Parsons School of Design in New York City for a year. She also went back to Taiwan and drew political cartoons for a daily newspaper. Her desire to create beauty eventually led her to Maui, Hawaii. At 32 years old, she finally began painting full time by teaching herself watercolors. Watercoloring for her has been a lesson in respecting the element of water and being a co-creating partner to the dance. Watercolor's challenges taught her important lessons about painting and life: to let go of control, be open to surprises, and appreciate the magic moment. And only by experimenting and pushing...
