Artist's Description

Four colors of paint were required for the hair: the first layer is Lemon Yellow, then Ochra, then then Burnt Sienna, and finally Ivory Black. This was the only way to give the hair a ribbon-like softness about it. Her skin was the easiest -- the white of the paper.

Frances Ku

Frances has been drawing since three years of age. Born in Taiwan and raised in Okinawa, she took art classes throughout high school and went to Parsons School of Design in New York City for a year. She also went back to Taiwan and drew political cartoons for a daily newspaper. Her desire to create beauty eventually led her to Maui, Hawaii. At 32 years old, she finally began painting full time by teaching herself watercolors. Watercoloring for her has been a lesson in respecting the element of water and being a co-creating partner to the dance. Watercolor's challenges taught her important lessons about painting and life: to let go of control, be open to surprises, and appreciate the magic moment. And only by experimenting and pushing...
